| Austin Maness was born on Dec. 15th, 1985 to Roger and Debra Maness of Clarksville, Tennessee. In 2003 he attended the Tennessee Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis. He graduated from Montgomery Central High School in 2004. Austin accepted an academic scholarship from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. At Pepperdine he has been under the mentorship of a young professor of religious studies, Robert Cargill (now of UCLA). Through Cargill, Austin became increasingly interested in the history of religion and its impact on culture and politics. During his sophomore year, Austin studied abroad at Pepperdine’s campus in Florence, Italy. While there he spent time working with local orphans and establishing a youth-education program at a small-protestant church in the Italian city of Tarranto. Returning to Malibu for his junior year, Austin served as a Spiritual Life Advisor for the University’s Housing and Community Living Department, as well as becoming increasingly involved in student government, and establishing a new fraternity chapter. This past summer, Austin studied counter-terrorism at the University of Tel-Aviv. During the current school year at Pepperdine, Austin is serving as Vice President of the Student Government Association. He also hopes to more fully establish an official inter-faith group on campus. Austin is excited to be working with IFYC and the rest of the fellows. |
